It’s so easy for a playroom to get a little out of hand—especially when you’ve got little ones who are full of imagination, energy, and big ideas. Recently, we had the joy of helping a wonderful family reset their play space. These parents were doing such a great job making room for creativity and fun, but like so many families, they were feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of toys, books, and art supplies that had quietly piled up over time.

They reached out wanting the playroom to feel more manageable and more functional—but still playful and inviting for their kids. The kind of space where it’s easy to start a project and easy to clean it up. So that’s exactly what we created together.

Step one: clear the clutter and make thoughtful decisions.
We started by pulling everything out and grouping like items together—books with books, puzzles with puzzles, dolls with dolls. It’s always surprising how many duplicates, broken pieces, or outgrown items we discover during this process. With so much grace and clarity, the client made thoughtful decisions about what truly served their family right now. 

Then we set up simple, purposeful zones.
Our focus wasn’t on making it look picture-perfect—it was about creating a space that functions beautifully for these kids and this family in real life. Here’s how we broke it down:

• Craft Zone: We used the family’s existing kid-sized table (just gave it a little breathing room by clearing it off), and added a cube organizer nearby to sort and contain all their craft supplies—markers, paper, glue sticks, scissors, you name it. Small hooks went up on the wall so the kids can proudly display their artwork, which instantly made the space feel more personal and inspiring.
  
• Dress-Up Corner: We added low hooks and labeled sea grass bins to hold costumes, capes, and accessories. Now they can pick their own outfits for pretend play.
  
• Toy Zone: An additional cube organizer that holds sea grass bins with bin clips and labels make cleanup easy, even for the youngest. We kept the favorites and made sure everything had a clear, consistent home.
  
• Books + Games: We intentionally removed adult books from the upper shelves and brought all the kids’ books down to their level—so now everything is within reach, and they can grab a favorite story all on their own. Closed drawers underneath now store games and puzzles neatly out of sight but still totally accessible when it’s time for independent play or family game night.

By the end of the session, the room felt lighter, calmer, and ready for all kinds of adventures. Even better? The kids jumped right in and were more engaged in play—because everything made sense to them. That’s the real magic of organizing for young children: when the space works for them, they naturally connect and take ownership.
