Creating a Versatile Pantry System

This was a project to upgrade and organize the pantry for a busy family with small children living between Richmond and Charlottesville. The family reached out as they wanted a better system for shopping in bulk, as well as for organizing and monitoring foods for a family member with a medical condition. Due to the location of this job, we aimed to complete the project in one day! The family already had existing over-the-door Elfa systems that we love! We installed a new Elfa system in the pantry to maximize storage space and create a functional pantry. Here’s a breakdown of the steps taken:

Removal and preparation: The existing shelving system was removed, and the walls were patched and painted to provide a fresh canvas for the Elfa system. By bringing in industrial-sized fans, we were able to expedite the drying process, minimizing downtime and completing the project efficiently.
Installation of the new Elfa system: Our in-house handyman assisted with installing the new Elfa system. Elfa systems are known for their versatility and customizable features, allowing us to create a tailored storage solution that suits the family’s needs. The new system provided ample space for storing bulk items and accommodating various pantry categories.
Categorizing and creating zones: While the installation was underway, our organizing assistants took charge of organizing the food items. They removed all items from the pantry, disposed of expired items, and decanted pantry items where appropriate. We also labeled many of the decanted items with important nutritional information needed for their family member’s unique medical needs.
Introducing new bins: The organizing assistants used bins to store the food items in a neat and organized manner. Decanting items into containers can help with space optimization, as well as making it easier to see and access items at a glance. And of course, everything was labeled! Our client even bought their own label maker after seeing ours!! 🙂
Accommodating the family’s specific needs: Due to the family member’s medical condition, we made sure that emergency equipment was front and center in the pantry. It was also well-labeled so that anyone would know where to find these items, even if they were not familiar with this pantry or in a panic! It provides peace of mind for the family member with the health condition, as well as for other family members and visitors, knowing that everything is clearly labeled and readily available when needed. We also helped accommodate this family by keeping snacks at a low level for easy access by the children! We even created an area in the pantry for Fido, as it was important for their furry family member to be included, with the food easily accessible for the children to help with Fido’s meals!We were able to transform the pantry into a more efficient and visually pleasing space. The upgraded Elfa system, coupled with the decluttering and organization of food items, will make it easier for the family to access and maintain their pantry supplies. Additionally, having the pantry well-suited for bulk shopping aligns with their location and shopping habits, providing convenience and cost-effectiveness.
